Grand Lake’s Fall Festival Calendar and the Final Grove Market Saturdays

By the second week of September, Monkey Island looks like someone turned the volume down. The ski boats that packed every cove on a July Saturday are down to a handful. Eddy's Lakeside Bar, which ran Friday through Sunday all summer at Shangri-La Marina, closed for the season the day after Labor Day. The Quarterdeck at Tera Miranda is winding toward its own seasonal close. If you judged Grand Lake by its docks alone right now, you'd assume the calendar goes quiet until Memorial Day.

That read is wrong, and it's wrong in a specific way worth knowing if you live here year-round. The lake's four biggest fall gatherings, plus the last month of the Grove farmers market, are all stacked into the six weeks that start right about now. The people who treat Labor Day as the end of the season miss the part of the year Grand Lake actually built its heritage calendar around.

What's Actually on the Calendar

Four events anchor the stretch between mid-September and late October. The Pelican Festival and Heartland Classics share the first weekend of October; the events otherwise fall on separate weekends, and each has a venue and, in most cases, a multi-decade history.

Event Date Location
Har-Ber Village Fall Heritage Festival Saturday, September 26 Har-Ber Village, Grove
43rd Annual Pelican Festival October 1-4 Wolf Creek Park, Grove
Heartland Classics wooden/antique boat show October 1-3 Cherokee Yacht Club & Marina, Afton
Jana Jae's fiddle and music festival October 17-18 Snider's Camp and Har-Ber Village

The Pelican Festival is the one most residents already circle, a four-day tradition at Wolf Creek Park built around the annual migration of American white pelicans through the region, with a carnival, arts and crafts booths, and boat tours added around the birds themselves. It shares its opening weekend with the Heartland Classics show at Cherokee Yacht Club, where the Antique and Classic Boat Society puts vintage and retro hulls on display along the Afton shoreline, free to walk through. Two flagship events, same first weekend of October, opposite ends of the lake.

The preceding weekend, Har-Ber Village hosts its own fall heritage festival on September 26, a single Saturday built around early American life at a museum that's been part of Grand Lake's identity for decades. And two and a half weeks after the pelicans and the boats, Jana Jae's festival closes out the run at Snider's Camp and Har-Ber Village, presented by the nonprofit Grand Lake Festivals organization that also runs the summer's music series.

None of this is new programming built to fill a quiet month. It's the same fall lineup Grand Lake has run for years. What changes each season is whether residents plan around it or let it pass while they're still thinking in summer terms.

The Restaurants That Don't Close With the Bars

The seasonal shutdown that makes the lake look empty in September is real, but it's selective. Eddy's Lakeside Bar's mid-May-through-Labor-Day window and the Quarterdeck's May-through-September run are built for the pontoon crowd that disappears once school starts. They're not a signal that the whole dining scene folds up.

Two spots worth knowing for the next six weeks sit at opposite ends of the lake's dining range. Red Arrow Marina's restaurant, a family-recipe Mexican kitchen that's been a fixture on the water since 1963, recently moved into a new building and stayed open, tequila list and lake view included. It's the kind of institution that outlasts a single season by design. On the upscale end, Drift on Grand at The Regatta keeps its indoor dining room, complete with an interior waterfall feature, and its lakefront patio running for weekend brunch well past the point where the boat-up bars have locked their docks for winter.

The practical takeaway is simple. If you're building a fall weekend around one of the four festivals above, check the seasonal schedules of marina restaurants tied to boat traffic after early September. Restaurants with a year-round kitchen are another option.

The Farmers Market's Last Saturdays

There's a smaller, quieter deadline sitting inside this same window. The Grove farmers market at the Downtown Square runs every Saturday from early May through October 3, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. That means the market's final three Saturdays land in the exact same stretch as the Har-Ber Village festival, the Pelican Festival weekend, and the Heartland Classics show. If a Saturday morning market run is part of your fall routine, this is the last month to work it in before next spring.

Planning the Next Six Weekends

Laid end to end, the calendar reads less like scattered events and more like a single deliberate season that Grand Lake runs after the boats thin out:

  • September 26 – Har-Ber Village's fall heritage festival, a self-contained Saturday at one of the lake's oldest attractions.
  • October 1-3 – Heartland Classics wooden and antique boat show at Cherokee Yacht Club in Afton, free and open to the public.
  • October 1-4 – The Pelican Festival at Wolf Creek Park in Grove, overlapping the boat show's opening weekend.
  • Through October 3 – The final Saturdays of the Grove farmers market at the Downtown Square.
  • October 17-18 – Jana Jae's fiddle and music festival, opening at Snider's Camp and closing at Har-Ber Village.

Treat Labor Day as the start of this run rather than the end of the lake's calendar, and the six weeks that follow hold more organized, named, dated programming than almost any other stretch of the year here. The docks are quieter. The events aren't.
